BandLab import and export (preview feature)

Note: This is a preview feature that is subject to change in the future. As always, we’d love to hear about how any of our new (and existing) features are working for you!

You can export Cakewalk projects to BandLab as well as download projects from your BandLab library and open them in Cakewalk. Import and export operations present several useful workflows, including:

Process BandLab tracks in Cakewalk with a host of audio plug-ins and advanced editing tools.

Publish your Cakewalk projects to BandLab, then embed the song on the Cakewalk User-submitted Songs forum at https://discuss.cakewalk.com/index.php?/forum/30-songs.

Check the mix in your car by connecting via Bluetooth to your car stereo.

Use Google Chromecast to stream songs to your HDTV or home audio hi-fi system.

Collaborate with other Cakewalk and/or BandLab users by sharing audio tracks via the cloud.

To export the current project to BandLab

1.	In the Control Bar’s Export module, select either Project or Selection to specify if you want to publish the entire project, or only selected clips and tracks.

If you want to publish individual tracks or buses, and the project contains more than 12 tracks or buses, you must select Selection and manually select the tracks or buses you want to export.

2.	Click the Export button, then select BandLab to open the Publish to BandLab dialog box.

3.	Select the desired publish options:

Project Name. Specify the name of the project as you want it to appear in BandLab. By default, the name is inherited from the Cakewalk project name.

Note: After the first export, subsequent exports from the same Cakewalk project will appear as revisions of the original BandLab project.

Mix. Publish the entire mix as a single track.

Tracks. Publish individual tracks, up to a maximum of 12 tracks. If the project contains more than 12 tracks, you must select Selection in the Export module and manually select the tracks you want to export.

Buses. Publish bus outputs, up to a maximum of 12 buses. If the project contains more than 12 buses, you must select Selection in the Export module and manually select the buses you want to export, along with the audio tracks that feed the buses. Click OK.

The project is exported to the C:\Users\<user name>\Documents\BandLab\Uploads folder. BandLab Assistant (see BandLab Assistant) detects any new or updated folder and files, and automatically uploads them to your BandLab library. This may take a while depending on project size and upload speed.

A toast notification appears after the export has been uploaded to the BandLab cloud.

To export a BandLab project from your BandLab library

To export a BandLab project as a file that can be opened in Cakewalk, follow these steps:

1.	Open BandLab Assistant (Utilities > BandLab Assistant).

2.	Select the Library tab.

3.	Point to the project you want to export, then click its Options button .

4.	On the drop-down menu, select Download Stems.

The project is exported to the C:\Users\<user name>\Documents\BandLab\Downloads folder, along with an \Audio subfolder that contains all the associated audio tracks. The exported project contains one clip per track, and track colors and initial volume and pan settings are preserved.

A toast notification appears after the download is complete.

Note: After you save a BandLab project in the web or mobile app, wait a few minutes before you use the Download Stems command in BandLab Assistant. This will provide sufficient time for all tracks to be mixed down in the background, and prevent any incomplete audio tracks from being downloaded. If you receive any error messages when opening a BandLab project in Cakewalk, use the Download Stems command again to redownload the project.

To open a BandLab project

To open a BandLab project as a new Cakewalk project, do one of the following:

In the Media Browser, select the BandLab Projects content location preset to show all exported BandLab projects in the C:\Users\<user name>\Documents\BandLab\Downloads folder. Double-click the desired project folder, then double-click the BandLab Interchange file (.blx).

Or

1.	Go to File > Open or press CTRL+O to open the Open dialog box.

2.	In the Go to Folder drop-down list, select BandLab Interchange File (.BLX) to navigate to the C:\Users\<user name>\Documents\BandLab\Downloads folder.

3.	Double-click the desired project folder.

4.	Select the BandLab Interchange file (.blx) and click Open.

The BandLab Interchange file opens as a new untitled Cakewalk project that must be saved with a new file name.

To import a BandLab project

To import a BandLab project into the current Cakewalk project, do one of the following:

Go to File > Import > BandLab Project.

In the Media Browser, select the BandLab Projects content location preset to show all exported BandLab projects in the C:\Users\<user name>\Documents\BandLab\Downloads folder. Double-click the desired project folder, then drag the BandLab Interchange file (.blx) to the Track view.

Tracks from the BandLab project are inserted below the last track, color-coded to match their original track colors.

Tip: You can also drag individual tracks from the exported BandLab project’s \Audio folder.
